Hospitality Venue Review – Beta Bar & Alpha Restaurant

First impressions

My heart skipped a beat…

Beta Bar and Alpha Restaurant are located in the historical Hellenic club in Sydney’s CBD on Castlereagh Street. It is no surprise that Beta Bar was named Best Bar, Australia & Pacific at the 2017 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards.

After you ascend the staircase you are welcomed by beautiful high ceilings, exposed brick arches and a direct view to the stunning bar at the end of the cosy seating area. The eyes scan the ornate white painted timber arched doors, the contemporary colour scheme of the carpet/ furniture and glittering brass pendant lights positioned perfectly.

The highest quality of design is seen in the selection of furniture from Café Culture and Space Furniture, light fittings by Café Culture + Insitu, unique cocktail glasses designed by Lee Broom.

The play on using contrasting finishes such as the rough brick walls next to soft velvet lounges, the marble tables next to brass tables, the perfectly selected contemporary carpet against the rough texture of the rendered bar and the mix of sumptuous armchairs next to metal low stools is a credit to the exceptional interior design of DS17.

Beta Bar is a must see with superb layered design details revealed each time you visit. The cocktails are worth the visit alone!

Alpha Restaurant upstairs is a contemporary and elegant restaurant designed by DS17 with a restrained neutral palette in it’s furnishings and finishes.

Paired back finishes compliment each other including the white marble tables, white hex mosaics, oak timber shelving, rough stone wall, tall white columns and oak bistro chairs, allowing the colourful food and crockery to capture the patrons attention.

The contemporary Grecian inspired interior creates the feeling of relaxing and dining in the Mediterranean without the jet lag and plane fares.

Favourite design feature

Beta Bar – The contemporary furniture and exposed arches

Alpha Restaurant – Greek letters carved into the stone wall

Creative solution/ quirk

The historical arches on the exterior of the Hellenic Club have been referenced in Beta Bar while also creating Grecian ambience with the use of exposed brick arches and rough white rendered walls.

Favourite beverage/ food

Beta Bar - Spartan Rose cocktail in the stunning marble & glass cocktail glasses

Alpha Restaurant – Dine with a group of friends to share the meze plates, my favourites include the moussaka, cauliflower salad and Loukoumades for dessert.

A visit to Beta Bar in the evening is perfect for the next romantic cocktail catch up followed by a delicious Greek feast of shared meze plates with loved ones. Enjoy!
